Every now and again a guitar comes along that makes you stop and think. This is one of those rare instruments, crafted by Ulrich Teuffel in Germany who is arguably the most creative luthier of our generation. The quality and attention to detail exhibited in all Teuffel instruments is legendary; the Antonio is no exception, possibly taking the art to new heights. This is a solid chambered body guitar crafted from Honduran mahogany and bound with zirocote, with a compound radius Les Paul scale neck and a custom, hand made humbucking pickup.
In Ulrich Teuffel's own words:
"The Antonio model is my quote to the guitar history. In the last years I looked back into my early times of guitar making and started to work on model with a historic appeal. Antonio is the first name of Antonio Torres and Antonio Stradivari both.
In my eyes the Torres Guitar is the ancestor of all modern guitars whether it be a nylon string, steel string or electric guitar. My Antonio model quotes the shape and the braces of Torres but it is a pure electric guitar with one neck pickup. There is no piezo onboard"
The guitar is made from Honduran mahogany. I use more dense tonewood for the through-neck and light parts for the upper body bout. The upper bout is quite long to provide a profound bass response. At the backside the section behind the bridge is carved into a twang section. The lower bout of the body is chambered.
All the hardwood parts are made from selected ziricote, such as fingerboard, headstock cover, jack plate cover bridge and binding.
This guitar is my first model with a 24 3/4 inch scale.
A bridge made from ziricote rests on two studs to allow a proper setup of the action. The ziricote bridge has a core of aluminium which contains all the threads and bores for the studs.
You can adjust the neck curvature with a two-way truss rod. The access of the truss-rod is a high dense carbon tube which reaches into the neck as a reinforcement for the headstock joint.
This jack plate is a solid aluminium plate covered with ziricote. The metric mounting screws rest in thread inserts in the body. The threads won't wear of and the jack plate will stay where it is supposed to be when you stumble across the cable.
The machines are Gotoh Stealth tuners, they are mounted in the in carbon tubes in the headstock which are reducing friction. All the little screws are mounted into a ziricote inlay to provide a proper fit and hold.
The neck pickup cites the shape of the soundhole of an acoustic guitar. In the ziricote cover mounted is a pickup with 7.3 k ohms. It is wound with AWG 42 wire. The Alnico 2 magnet is not fully saturized to make the tone more mellow. The volume is a push-pull pot When pulling it you split the pickup."
